Full-time, Remote Accounting Manager for SF Bay Area Bookkeepers with Smarts + Soul

New Insight Accounting is a Bay Area, CA bookkeeping firm with smarts and soul. We give innovative and socially responsible small businesses power over their finances to support their mission of doing great things in the world.

Our growing, woman-owned firm provides virtual bookkeeping services to 70+ local small businesses and solopreneurs. We have cultivated a strong reputation for our accounting expertise, integrity, and warmth with our clients, and we aim to keep it that way! We were even awarded 2026 Best Accounting Practice in both the Oakland Magazine and the East Bay Express.

Are you an experienced accountant with a love for supporting small businesses, attention to detail and a knack for people? We’re looking for you! This position is full-time and remote.

You’ve Got the Chops

● You are an experienced accounting professional with a positive outlook and a passion for helping others succeed;

● You love accounting and have a solid understanding of general accounting principles. You also are an experienced QuickBooks Online user;

● You have experience and enjoy leading a team and reviewing the work of others;

● When you look at a balance sheet and P&L you don’t just see numbers on a page, you see a story. Seeing a negative liability account balance raises your eyebrows and inspires you to dig into solving it. You are happy as a clam to dig in to messy books and roll up your sleeves to get them clean and pretty;

● You can work with business owners to help them understand their numbers and how they can use their data to make better decisions;

● You are looking for a long-term opportunity with a company that is committed to work-life balance, and that promotes a culture of respect, kindness, and transparency;

● You are an excellent communicator, and you’re caring and kind towards clients and our team;

● You are collaborative; you have the capacity for self-reflection and giving constructive peer feedback;

● You have excellent time-management skills, and you excel at managing multiple tasks and prioritizing work accordingly;

● You are methodical, organized and can keep your eye on the ball, but don’t get easily frazzled when you must pivot;

● You work well independently but value connection and — when there is a small team to check in with— all the better;

● You like working efficiently but you value accuracy more than speed. You have an eye for the big picture but can nail the details. No one has to check your work because you are meticulous at checking your own. Although, we all make mistakes from time to time, so you also value feedback knowing it helps improve the work product;

● You bring fresh ideas based on your own experience, yet you aren’t too set in your ways to be flexible and willing to adapt to our established processes, understanding that there’s not just one way;

● You get satisfaction out of creating a pretty and informative report and get joy from seeing a light bulb go off for a client or team member when training them. You also do a happy dance when you get a complicated account to reconcile;

● You enjoy helping others and keeping them on track, and you know when to speak up and how to do it with patience and compassion;

● You love learning new things and taking ownership of a client or project, yet you also get joy out of doing the little stuff that comes your way. Sometimes you’ll have to be the one to initiate, nudge, remind the firm owner to hand things over to you and you’re ok with that. You get satisfaction with having her back and supporting our team to be successful;

● You have personal integrity, respect client confidentiality, and have a great work ethic;

● You love working from home and having a flexible schedule.

We’re Pretty Awesome, Too

● Our office is 100% virtual, and we have been for over 10 years;

● The hours are flexible, and we support families coming first. This role does require interaction with the team and clients during normal PST business hours in a professional home-office setting. But lots of your work can be done at a time and place that works for you;

● We’re warm and kind, and our team encourages learning and supports professional and personal growth;

● We have a wonderful relationship with our clients, who value us;

● We welcome your creativity and great ideas to help design your role in a way that fits us both.

Some specific things you’ll get to do:

Team Leadership & Development

● Supervise, mentor, and support our team of 3-4 experienced bookkeepers, ensuring the quality and accuracy of client financials;

● Conduct regular reviews of month-end closes, providing feedback and assistance;

● Conduct regular 1:1s, performance check-ins, and skill development plans.

Quality Control & Technical Review

● Maintain a portfolio of client accounts utilizing cloud-based tools (QuickBooks Online and ancillary apps such as Double, Dext, Bill.com, Gusto payroll, etc.);

● Be able to review a client’s QBO files to ensure accuracy and derive meaningful information from them, identify and fix problems when they are discovered;

● General bookkeeping, including recording transactions, bank feed, monthly account reconciliations, journal entries, reviewing receipts, etc. (While this won’t be your primary role for all of your clients, there is always some and you don’t mind doing it);

● Additional higher-level accounting responsibilities such as payroll, sales tax returns, journal entries, account review and analysis, report preparation, cash flow forecasting;

● Troubleshoot client accounting issues and requests, and identify areas of improvement;

● Note that we do not do tax returns, so tax preparation experience is not required, although a general understanding of basic taxation as it relates to preparing tax-ready books is very helpful;

● Stay current on QBO features/updates and roll out best practices to the team.

Client Relationship Management

● Serve as an escalation point for client questions and concerns

● Join client check-in calls for higher-touch accounts;

● Translate accounting concepts into plain language for non-accountant business owners;

● Identify opportunities for additional services (advisory, cleanup projects, etc.)

Process & Firm Operations

● Serve as a liaison between our clients and their tax preparers as needed during tax season;

● Help establish, document, and refine internal processes and procedures for efficiency and consistency across the team;

● You will deal with a lot of confidential information and will need to be discreet and always take careful effort to manage data in a secure manner;

● Reports to the firm owner.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to support us in every way you can to help great businesses improve the world.
