About the Position

JFW Accounting Services is seeking an experienced Nonprofit Senior Accountant to provide full-cycle accounting services to multiple nonprofit clients.

This is a client accounting services position—not an internal accounting role supporting a single organization. The selected candidate will manage several unrelated nonprofit clients simultaneously and must be comfortable balancing competing deadlines, communicating directly with clients, and maintaining accurate financial records across multiple organizations.

Qualified candidates must have at least 5 years of hands-on nonprofit accounting experience, prior consulting or outsourced accounting experience, demonstrated full-cycle accounting ownership, audit-preparation experience, and strong proficiency in QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Manage full-cycle accounting activities for multiple nonprofit clients.
  • Maintain accurate accounting records in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Complete month-end close activities, including:
    • Bank and credit-card reconciliations
    • General-ledger review and maintenance
    • Journal entries
    • Accruals and prepaid expenses
    • Fixed-asset accounting
    • Balance-sheet reconciliations
    • Account analysis and correction of discrepancies
  • Prepare monthly financial statements, including:
    • Statements of financial position
    • Statements of activities
    • Cash-flow reports
    • Budget-to-actual reports
    • Supporting schedules and management reports
  • Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, deposits, billing, vendor payments, and aging reports.
  • Maintain grant, program, department, class, and restricted-fund accounting records.
  • Review income and expenses for appropriate grant, program, department, class, and funding-source allocation.
  • Prepare audit schedules, account reconciliations, supporting documentation, and responses to auditor requests.
  • Support Form 990 preparation and other nonprofit compliance reporting.
  • Process payroll and payroll changes and reconcile payroll-related accounts.
  • Prepare year-end reports, including 1099 filings, accounts-payable and accounts-receivable cutoffs, and supporting schedules.
  • Assist clients with budget preparation, cash-flow projections, and financial planning.
  • Advise clients regarding chart-of-accounts structure, classes, departments, programs, grants, and financial reporting.
  • Identify accounting discrepancies, communicate concerns promptly, and recommend appropriate corrections.
  • Assist with accounting-system implementations, conversions, cleanups, and process improvements when assigned.
  • Build professional, responsive, and dependable relationships with assigned clients.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, or another reasonably related discipline from an appropriately accredited college or university.
  • At least five years of hands-on nonprofit accounting experience.
  • At least five years of total accounting or bookkeeping experience. Seven or more years is strongly preferred.
  • At least five years of experience applying GAAP in an accounting role.
  • Prior experience providing consulting, outsourced, fractional, or client accounting services to multiple unrelated organizations.
  • Demonstrated responsibility for several clients or entities with competing deadlines.
  • Demonstrated full-cycle accounting and month-end close experience.
  • Experience preparing monthly financial statements and performing balance-sheet and general-ledger reconciliations.
  • Experience preparing audit schedules and supporting external financial-statement audits.
  • Strong QuickBooks Online proficiency.
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks Desktop.
  • Experience with nonprofit grant accounting, restricted funds, classes, departments, programs, or grant allocations.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting practices.
  • Current or recent hands-on accounting experience. Applicants with an employment gap of six months or longer should explain the circumstances and how they have maintained their accounting knowledge and professional readiness.
  • A work history demonstrating reasonable continuity, reliability, and follow-through. Applicants with multiple positions lasting two years or less should explain whether the roles were temporary, contract-based, project-based, affected by layoffs or organizational changes, or ended for another reason.
  • Ability to work consistently Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Eastern.
  • Stable internet access and a private, professional remote workspace.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills sufficient to communicate clearly with clients and colleagues in English.
  • Ability to manage confidential financial information.
  • Willingness to complete a background check.
  • Residence in a state where JFW Accounting Services is authorized and willing to employ remote team members.
  • Completion of every required application question with sufficient detail to verify the applicant’s qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Seven or more years of accounting experience.
  • Experience managing a portfolio of unrelated nonprofit clients.
  • Sage Intacct experience.
  • Accounting-system implementation or conversion experience.
  • Payroll-processing experience.
  • Form 990 preparation support.
  • Government-grant accounting experience.
  • Single-audit experience.
  • Budget development and cash-flow forecasting experience.
  • Experience presenting financial information to nonprofit executives, boards, and program leaders.
  • Experience improving accounting procedures, internal controls, month-end close processes, or client reporting.

Schedule and Work Expectations

The regular schedule is Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Eastern.

Limited scheduling flexibility may be available with prior approval. Additional hours, including occasional evenings or weekends, may be required during month-end, year-end, audit periods, or urgent client deadlines.

Because this position supports multiple clients, the selected candidate must be dependable, responsive, organized, and able to communicate promptly when priorities or deadlines conflict.

Applicants who currently provide independent accounting, bookkeeping, tax, or consulting services must be willing and able to transition those responsibilities before beginning full-time employment with JFW Accounting Services. The selected candidate must be able to devote their full professional working schedule to JFW and its clients without a competing workload.
